Melbourne's victory secured a 2-0 win over Newcastle Jets at No.2 sportground in round 11 of the Ninja A-league Women's season. Goals from Emily Gielnik and Rachel Lowe sealed the deal for victory, propelling them to second on the ladder while Newcastle continued with their struggles.

The visitors set the tone early, applying relentless pressure on the Jets defence. Emily

Gielnik was a standout, using her pace and power to exploit space down the right wing.

Gielnik opened the scoring in the 17th minute, rifling a shot past Jets goalkeeper Tiahna

Robertson at the near post after a well-timed pass from Sara D’Appolonia. Despite Victory’s

control, Newcastle came close to equalising in the 32nd minute when Lauren Allan broke

through Victory’s defensive line. However, goalkeeper Courtney Newbon made a crucial

close-range save to preserve her team’s lead. Victory doubled their advantage just before

halftime. Sara D'Appolonia, pivotal throughout the match, delivered a pinpoint cross to

Rachel Lowe, who lunged to toe the ball into the net, giving Victory a comfortable two-goal

cushion at the break.

The Jets began the second half with a more attacking mindset, but Victory's defence

remained resolute. Newcastle managed only one shot on target in the second 45 minutes,

as the visitors' backline, led by captain Kayla Morrison, thwarted their efforts. Regardless of

their congested schedule, Victory made strategic substitutions to inject fresh legs. Ella

O’Grady, Sofia Sakalis, and Rosie Curtis provided energy, ensuring their team maintained

control of the game.

Melbourne Victory demonstrated why they are serious title contenders this season. Jeff Hopkins praised his team’s performance, especially given the challenges of a demanding schedule.

Emily Gielnik, returning to goal-scoring form after a dry spell, expressed optimism for the team’s momentum moving forward. “It’s been a tough week with three games, but this win and clean sheet feel great,” Gielnik said in a post-match interview.

“We’re starting to rebuild, find our rhythm, and play more fluently. This is a positive step for us.”

Victory now shifts focus to their upcoming clash against Perth Glory, while Newcastle will look to regroup and reignite their campaign.
