Ellie Roebuck returns to the WSL with Aston Villa after the mutual agreement to terminate her contract with Barcelona.
She signed for the three time UEFA Women’s Champions League winners from Manchester City back in May 2024, and she leaves the La Liga champions after just one season and two appearances.
Roebuck got her start at 15 joining the Manchester City development squad and in 2018 she signed her first professional contract with the club. From then she racked up 93 caps for the club with her last cap being earned in May 2023 against Manchester United where she received a red card just before half time for a bad tackle outside the box.
In her final season at City, she only was included in the matchday squad six times and within those was an unused substitute. The reason for her absence was eventually disclosed by Roebuck via a social media post in March 2024. In this post she explained that she had suffered an left occipital infarct, a type of ischaemic stroke, earlier that year. She further explained that there was no lasting damage to her brain or her vision and that she was on the road to recovery.
On the international stage, she has 11 senior caps for England with her last call up being in October 2023. She also has 4 caps for Great Britain having played in all 4 games at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
She now returns back to the top flight of women's football in England signing a two year contract with Aston Villa.
