This weekend’s clash between Everton and Aston Villa is looking to be heating up; both teams are only separated in the Women’s Super League by goal difference, with each side going into this match with nine points apiece. It’s all to play for this Saturday, 19th January 2025, at Walton Hall Park.
The hosts’ FA Cup match was postponed last week due to icy pitch conditions, but before the winter break, they were not looking to be in top form, having lost three out of five of their fixtures with an average of 0.8 goals per game. Despite this, they had a shock, first-time victory over current league runners-up Manchester City, only conceding one goal from an 89th minute penalty. Top scorer Honoka Hayashi looks to be a likely contender for the starting line up in Saturday’s match, having scored two out of the six total goals that the team has achieved so far in the WSL, and being a usual feature in the Toffee’s starting line-up.
Following the 9-0 success of Aston Villa against Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup last weekend, the team are looking to be in good form going into this clash. From their previous five matches, they have obtained a substantial 3.2 goal average per match, with promising victories over Charlton Athletic, West Ham United and of course Bristol Rovers last weekend, and have won three out of five of their previous matches. Villa’s WSL season is going well, and they are sitting at a comfortable 7th on the table, with twelve total goals to their name. Lionesses’ legend, Rachel Daly, is their top scorer so far this season having scored against Tottenham Hotspurs, Crystal Palace, and twice against Brighton and (similarly to Hayashi) is a consistent feature in the team’s line up.
Out of a total of nineteen head-to-head meetings across all previous competitions, it is Everton that appears to be the stronger team, having won twelve of the previous fixtures. Only two of the previous matches have ended in a draw, meaning that Aston Villa are left with only five victories to their name against the hosts. However, with a promising advantage over the Toffees this season with double the amount of goals so far (twelve in comparison to six), will it be a victory for Villa or will the Toffees come out on top?
