Historic Rivals, New Stakes

On Sunday, February 9th, at 17:30, Eintracht Frankfurt will host their 54th match against 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam at the Brentanobad Stadium. No other teams have faced each other as often as these two.
While Frankfurt enters this game as the clear favorite, Potsdam will fight against all odds to escape the relegation zone.
Currently, Eintracht Frankfurt leads the Frauen-Bundesliga table with 32 points, level with second-placed FC Bayern but ahead on goal difference. Frankfurt has scored an impressive 41 goals while conceding only 7, giving them a solid foundation to stay on top and potentially take home the title at the end of the season.
Potsdam, on the other hand, has managed to collect just one point, scoring only two goals but painfully conceding 38. As it stands, Potsdam faces relegation. However, with changes to the Frauen-Bundesliga structure starting next season, only the 12th-placed team will be relegated. Potsdam’s neighbors in the table are FC Carl Zeiss Jena with three points and Köln with six points, one of which Köln earned in an impressive draw against VfL Wolfsburg on Friday. This leaves Potsdam with a fighting chance to save themselves and stay in the top tier.
Kurt Russ’ Potsdam will head into this game with tremendous motivation to claw their way out of the relegation zone, fueled by their strong first-half performance last weekend against SV Werder Bremen. For Frankfurt, the biggest challenge will be standing firm against a team playing with this much pressure. But with Frankfurt’s quality, featuring players like Géraldine Reuteler and Laura Freigang, this is a challenge they should be able to overcome. There’s even a chance that injured Sophia Kleinherne could return to Frankfurts squad, expanding coach Niko Arnautis’ options for the Sunday evening clash.
On Potsdam’s side, the lineup likely won’t differ much from their last game, with special focus on attacking players Viktoria Schwalm and Bianca Schmidt, who will need to give it their all to break through Frankfurt’s defense.
Both teams will be highly motivated by their different objectives for this season, promising an exciting match.
