Another Manchester Derby is just around the corner! On January 22nd at 7:00 PM, Manchester United W.F.C. will host Manchester City Women at Leigh Sports Village in the quarterfinals of the Women’s League Cup.
This clash comes only three days after their dramatic showdown in the Barclays Women’s Super League, where United came out on top. Ella Toone was the standout star, delivering a breathtaking hat-trick to lead the Red Devils to a 4-2 victory. That win not only pushed City down to fourth in the league table but also gave United a huge boost of confidence heading into this match.
City, however, have plenty of firepower in their ranks, with Vivianne Miedema and Jill Roord ready to make an impact. Yet, they’ll still be without their key striker, Kadija “Bunny” Shaw, who hasn’t recovered in time for this game. “At the moment, no [to playing against United], but probably for the weekend against Villa, which is a positive,” City boss Gareth Taylor shared in today’s press conference.
Meanwhile, Marc Skinner, United’s head coach, hinted at a slight rotation to reward other players for their efforts. Speaking to the press, he said:
“Man City will bring that energy and commitment, and we have to match it—and go above it—if we want to win this game.”
The weekend’s defeat will undoubtedly sting for the Sky Blues and serve as extra motivation to show they are the stronger side in Manchester. On the other hand, the Red Devils are buzzing with confidence and will look to ride the wave of their recent success.
Will we see another Ella Toone masterclass, with United cementing their dominance? Or was the weekend result just a blip for City, who are ready to reassert their power? Only time will tell!
