This Wednesday, West Ham United are set to host Liverpool at Chigwell Construction Stadium in the 4th round of the Women’s FA Cup. Having been postponed from the 11th of January due to icy pitch conditions alongside many other fixtures that were scheduled to take place that day. These teams are in close contention with one another in the WSL, so fans can expect a tight match between these teams on Wednesday. Whoever wins this match will go through to the 5th Round Proper to face Rugby Borough in an away fixture after the draw took place on Monday the 13th of January.
West Ham are currently in 8th place on the WSL table with only three wins to their name this season. However, after a somewhat shocking 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspurs in the Subway Women’s League Cup last week, their prospects in this match are looking considerably more promising. They have obtained an average of 1.6 goals per game in their previous five fixtures, despite losses to both Chelsea (5-0) and Aston Villa (3-1). A likely feature for the Irons’ starting lineup is Viviane Asseyi, who has started 12 matches for the club this season, and has also obtained four goals and four assists, contributing to the team’s average of 1.2 goals per WSL game.
The visitors are in a higher position on the WSL table, sitting in 7th with three wins, three draws and six losses so far this season. They’ve got a mixed bag with their past five fixtures, with three losses and only two and an average of 1.2 goals scored per game, leaving them slightly behind their opponents in terms of goal average. Olivia Smith will likely feature in the Reds’ lineup, as her talent as a striker is something that the team will likely want to exploit. She has already started twelve of the WSL matches this season and has managed to score four goals as well.
Head-to-head, these teams have faced off against each other eleven times in total, with Liverpool claiming victory five times. However, four of the eleven outcomes have ended in a draw, showing that these two teams are very close to one another competitively.
It’s all to play for on Wednesday and with a win for the Reds looking likely, will West Ham be able to perform another shocker on Liverpool as they did with Spurs almost a week ago?
