Sam Kerr has joined Liverpool, from Bayern Munich, on a loan deal until the end of the season.
The midfielder moved to the German league in 2023 and won the Frauen-Bundesliga in her first season. This season has seen her struggle for minutes in the midfield. Competing against Lioness Georgia Stanway and Austrian international Sarah Zadrazil, Kerr has started only two league games this season.
Before signing with the German side, Kerr spent time at Glasgow City, where she won four consecutive league titles. She then moved to join Glasgow Rangers and helped them to win their first SWPL 1 title in 2022 and a maiden Scottish Women’s Cup in 2023.
Individually, Kerr was named Scotlands 2022 Women’s Player of the Year and was included in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year in 2021-22 and 2022-23. She represented her country through all the age groups and made her senior debut at just 20 years old.
Kerr has been on Liverpool’s radar for a couple of years; even before she moved to Bayern Munich. Club manager Matt Beard said they “nearly had a done deal” so is no doubt happy to be bringing her to the WSL even though it’s for a short time.
“We’re probably getting a more complete player now, a little bit older with experience of playing for one of the biggest European women’s football teams,”
After injuries dampened the Reds start to the season, Kerr will get a a chance to increase her game time, all while adding quality and experience to the squad.
“I spoke to Matt and obviously the club before I came, and I love their ambitions and am really excited to get started”
Kerr said in her announcement interview.
Kerr could make her debut this weekend against West Ham in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, with her first WSL action coming against Brighton on January 17th.
